Red-Hot Jeffs Ready for Postseason

From a NESCAC Release

May 9, 2007

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College baseball team will travel west to play in the 2007 NESCAC Championship Tournament at Bobby Coombs Field in Williamstown, MA and Joe Wolfe Field, home of NEBCL’s North Adams Steeple Cats in North Adams, MA. Amherst (19-12/9-3 NESCAC West) opens tournament play Friday at 3:30 p.m. in North Adams against the top seed in the NESCAC East, Tufts University (23-10/10-2 NESCAC East).

The NESCAC baseball tournament has a double elimination format, with games played simultaneously at the two sites. In the other first round game, tournament host and the West’s top seed Williams College (22-8/9-3 NESCAC West) faces the second seed in the East, Bowdoin College (18-14/9-3 NESCAC East), at 3 p.m. in Williamstown.

The Lord Jeffs, the only program to have won multiple NESCAC Baseball titles (2004, 2005), return to the tournament this year after falling short of  making a fourth-consecutive appearance in 2006. Amherst enters the tournament riding a seven-game win streak and will face Tufts for the first time since the first game of the 2005 NESCAC tournament.

Friday’s meeting will be the fourth occasion the two teams have faced each other on the first day, with Amherst winning the previous two meetings, 5-3 in 2005 and 5-1 in 2003. Amherst heads into the weekend third among conference teams in batting average, hitting at a .326 clip, while the pitching staff has combined for a 4.71 ERA this season.

Junior catcher Neal Allar (Floyds Knobs, IN) leads the Jeffs in most statistical categories this season, including a .372 batting average, six home runs, a .602 slugging percentage, and a league-leading 41 RBIs. Junior LHP Ryan Platzbecker (Westlake, OH) is 5-0 through 11 appearances this spring with a team-best 3.68 ERA, while senior RHP Nick Kehoe (Washington Depot, CT) is 4-2 with a 4.70 ERA, holding batters to a .216 average and recording 51 strikeouts, second among all NESCAC pitchers.
