Jeffs Win NESCAC Opener at Wesleyan, 6-3
March 30, 2007
MIDDLETOWN, CT – The Amherst College baseball team played its first game in New England this afternoon at Little Three and NESCAC rival Wesleyan University. The Lord Jeffs posted an impressive 6-3 win on the shoulders of starting pitcher Nick Kehoe (Washington Depot, CT), who put in seven solid innings of work.
Amherst got the scoring started in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead, but the Cardinals responded with three runs in the bottom of the third. The Jeffs regained the lead in the fifth with another two-run inning and were able to add a pair of insurance runs in the eighth, as Kehoe held Wesleyan scoreless after the third inning.
Kehoe struck out 11 batters and surrendered only five hits, allowing just two earned runs. First-year John D’Angelo (Woodbridge, CT) allowed only three hits in two innings of relief to pick up his first save of the season.
Senior co-captain Mark Mazzone (Wilmette, IL) and first-year Will Lawton (Newton, MA) each had two hits for Amherst. First-year Andy Thal (McLean, VA) and sophomore Angus Schaller (Leucadia, CA) provided the run-production, going 1-for-4 with two RBIs and 1-for-5 with an RBI, respectively. Juniors Neal Allar (Floyds Knobs, IN) and Josh Card (North Adams, MA), senior Tom Scott (Randolph, NJ) and sophomore Nat Pedley (Rye, NY) each chipped in with a hit for the Jeffs.
Alex Mautone did all he could to spark the Cardinal offense, finishing the day 4-for-4 with an RBI, while Brice Kelly went 2-for-5. Louis Gabel picked up the loss, allowing nine hits and six earned runs in 7.2 innings of work.
Amherst improves to 5-5 with the win, but sits at 1-0 in the all-important NESCAC West standings after today. The Jeffs will return to action at Wesleyan Saturday for a NESCAC doubleheader. Game one is set to start at 1 p.m.
