FORT MYERS, FL – The Amherst College baseball team churned out 32 hits in a doubleheader sweep over Plymouth State College on Friday afternoon, winning the opener 16-3 and the second game 12-4.
Senior hurler Nick Kehoe (Washington Depot, CT) went the distance in Game 1, striking out eight and scattering just three earned runs to run his record to 1-0. Senior Mark Mazzone (Wilmette, IL) paced the offense with two doubles, a pair of singles and three RBIs. Sophomore Brendan Powers (Walpole, MA) added a double and two singles, while senior Tom Scott (Randolph, NJ) singled twice, tripled and plated a trio of runs. Sophomore Angus Schaller (Leucadia, CA) also singled three times in the win.
The nightcap provided a bit more drama. With the scored knotted 4-4, Amherst busted it wide open with eight runs in the eighth inning, keyed by Mazzone’s first home run of the season, and an RBI triple off the centerfield wall by junior Neal Allar (Floyds Knob, IN). Scott and rookie shortstop Andy Thal (McLean, VA) each doubled and singled in the win, and Thal (1-0) picked up his first collegiate pitching victory in relief.
Sitting at 4-4 on the season, Amherst wraps up its Florida swing Saturday at 9 a.m. with a single game against 14th-ranked St. Thomas.
