Men's and Women's Squash Swept At Amherst Invitational

AMHERST, MA - The eleventh-ranked Amherst College men's squash team fell to No. 5 University of Pennsylvania, 9-0, while the No. 11 women were also shutout by the sixth-ranked Quakers and were edged by No. 16 Middlebury, 5-4.

In the closest match of the day on the men's side, junior Auloke Mathur (Mumbai, India) won his first two games at the No. 2 slot against Penn sophomore Lee Rosen (Linwood, NJ), but surrendered the last three and fell 3-2 (4-9, 9-10, 9-2, 9-4, 9-4). Sophomore Mark Rapisarda (Brooklyn, NY) and rookie Jerome Giovinazzo (Staten Island, NY) each took one game in their matchesas the men's team fell to 4-2.

No Jeff woman was able to snatch more than four points from Penn on Saturday morning, but brought it down to the wire against No. 16 Middlebury in the second match of the day. Juniors No. 1 Caroline Shannon (Hanover, NH) and No. 3 Emily O'Brien (New Canann, CT) both handily won their matches in straight sets, and junior Sarah Harper (Rochester, MN) and sophomore Libby Martin (St. Louis, MO) also pulled out wins for the Jeffs at No. 2 and No. 5. Senior co-captain Scotty Hanley (Sparks, MD) and sophomore Di Kirkwood (Bedford Corners, NY) both took their opponents to five games but were unable to pull out wins for the Jeffs, who fell to 3-5.

Both squads return to action on Wednesday, January 18 as the men host No. 8 Dartmouth College and the women face the fifth-ranked Big Green, at 5 p.m.
