Muller Drains Career-High 22, Leads Jeffs Past Smith, 67-54

December 14, 2005

AMHERST, MA - Junior guard Jenny Muller (Andover, MA) drained a career-high 22 points, including 15 in the first half, to lead the Amherst women’s basketball team past visiting Smith College, 67-54, on Wednesday night. Muller shot a scorching 77.8% (7-for-9) from the field, 80% from the three-point line (4-for-5), and a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.

Smith drew first blood on a three-pointer from sophomore Ashley Sutton (Greenfield, MA) just 22 seconds after the whistle, and with the help of a jumper from junior Helena Charron (Pittsfield, NH), quickly built a 5-4 edge, but the small lead would be the only of the game for the Pioneers, as Amherst countered with a triple of their own off the hands of Muller only a minute later and never trailed again. Amherst led by as many as 16 in the first frame, tallying seven steals and outrebounding Smith 19-11.

Amherst stretched their lead to 19 in the opening minutes of the second half, but Smith would not go down quietly, as junior Nati Lenchner (Azor, Israel) netted 12 second half points in the comeback attempt. Rookie Yasmine Harik (Rye Brook, NY) led a stalwart defense, pulling down eight rebounds, while sophomore Stefanie Reiff (Hinsdale, IL) and senior Katie Latham (Wakefield, MA) each contributed seven boards, with six of Reiff’s coming on the offensive end.

Latham and Reiff each joined Muller in double figures with 11 points apiece, while junior Krissy Morin (Litchfield, NH) added nine. Harik had seven points to go along with four steals. Lenchner finished with 16 points to lead Smith.

Amherst returns to action on New Year’s Eve at 1 p.m. (PST) at the University of Redlands.
