Women's Basketball Suffers 59-43 Setback at Clark

FROM A CLARK UNIVERSITY RELEASE

December 6, 2005

WORCESTER, MA – The Amherst College women’s basketball team suffered a 59-43 setback at non-conference foe Clark University on Tuesday night. The Jeffs mustered only a 30.6% (15-for-49) shooting percentage, including a 21.7% (five-for-23) performance in the second half, as they fell to 2-5 on the year, while Clark remained undefeated at 7-0.

The two squads traded buckets in the opening minute as senior Carolyn Towle dropped in an offensive putback for Clark and Amherst sophomore Shaina Pollack (Great Neck, NY) fed senior teammate Katie Latham (Wakefield, MA) for a jumper, but this would be the last tie of the game. The Cougars maintained a slight lead throughout the remainder of the first half as the Jeffs pulled within four on a trifecta from junior Jenny Muller (Andover, MA) at the 14:08-mark, and later cut the Clark advantage to five with 3:15 left before the break on a layup from sophomore Stefanie Reiff (Hinsdale, IL). However, consecutive jumpers from Towle and classmate Andrea Comen gave the hosts a 10-point edge at halftime.

The second-half brought more of the same as Amherst would continually battle back, reducing the lead to as little as three, but Clark managed to regain composure and maintain the advantage throughout. The Jeffs began fouling in the waning minutes to try to cut deeper into the lead, but Clark converted on five-of-six free-throw attemps, while the Jeffs were unable to connect on a series of long-range tries, allowing the Cougars to coast to the win.

Muller finished with a team-high 13 points and three assists, and was joined in double-figures by Latham with 11 points and a game-high eight boards. Comen paced Clark with 19 points, while junior Ashley Auclair canned 12 points and seven rebounds.

Amherst returns to action Friday at 7 p.m. against visiting non-conference opponent Skidmore College.
