Jeffs Overwhelm Emerson, 71-36, in Inugural Season-Opening Amherst Classic
November 19, 2005
The Jeffs wasted no time gaining control of the game, building a 12-2 lead out of the gate on the strength of five early points by sophomore point guard Shaina Pollack (Great Neck, NY). Emerson clawed back, cutting the lead to as little as three points (16-13) with 11 minutes left in the half, but Amherst would rally again, posting a 21-5 run down the stretch to hold a 37-18 advantage at the half.
Amherst picked up right where it left off after the break surrendering only one basket in the first 10 minutes of second-half action. Meanwhile the Jeff offense was firing on all cylinders and the lead quickly reached 34 points (54-20). Amherst went deep into its bench, but the Jeffs' attack was relentless and the spread widened to as many as 40 points with just over two minutes left to play.
Junior guard Jenny Muller (Andover, MA) notched a team-high 11 points and four assists, followed closely by Pollack, who finished with 10 points and four steals. The remaining Amherst starters, seniors Katie Latham (Wakefield, MA) and Krissy Morin (Litchfield, NH) and sophomore Stefanie Reiff (Hinsdale, IL), chipped in eight points apiece, while Latham added a game-high eight rebounds and a pair of blocks. Rookie Stacy Brossy (Honolulu, HI) paced the Amherst reserves with seven points in her first collegiate outing, while classmate Yasmine Harik (Rye Brook, NY) had an excellent floor game, tallying six rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Junior Pam Coppola (Burlington, MA) led Emerson with 12 points and sophomore Alie Bernier (Dayville, CT) joined her in double figures with 10.
In the second game, Westfield St. outlasted the Cadets in a thrilling battle. Rookie guard Lauren Sylvain (Hadley, MA) led the Owls with 15 points on five trifectas, while sophomore Becky Passetto (Housatonic, MA) posted 13 points, including several clutch free throws down the stretch. Senior guard Meghan McCarthy (Belchertown, MA) was outstanding as well, notching four assists and four steals. Junior Kristi Powlovich (Jericho, CT) led Norwich with 14 points and nine rebounds, and reserve first-year guard Kayleigh Shappy (Burlington, VT) chipped in 11 points in just 19 minutes of action.
