FROM A COLBY COLLEGE RELEASE

January 28, 2006

WATERVILLE, ME – The Amherst College women’s basketball team outscored NESCAC host Colby College 30-19 in the opening half en route to a 59-45 victory on Saturday afternoon. The Jeffs moved to 8-9 overall and 3-2 in conference play, while Colby dropped to 7-11 (1-4 NESCAC).

The Jeffs wouldn’t allow a Colby bucket until the 15:13-mark as they cruised out to an 8-0 lead on the strength of back-to-back layups from sophomore Stefanie Reiff (Hinsdale, IL). The Mules hung around as three-pointers from sophomore Tanya Robash and first-year Courtney Williams kept them close, but Amherst pushed the lead to double-digits with a 10-0 run that was capped by an and-one finish from senior co-captain Krissy Morin (Litchfield, NH) and a three-ball from sophomore Shaina Pollack (Great Neck , NY). However, Colby closed the half with consecutive scores to cut Amherst’s lead to 11 at the break.

Amherst opened the second half the same as they began the first, rolling an 8-0 spurt to stretch their lead to 19, 38-19. The Jeffs controlled the Mules throughout the half, outrebounding them 22-15 and allowing them to come no closer than 14 points throughout regulation.

Reiff led all scorers with 16 points and a career-high nine rebounds, while Pollack chipped in 13 points. Morin and fellow co-captain Katie Latham (Wakefield, MA) notched 10 points apiece, while Latham grabbed nine caroms and Morin added six boards and four assists.

Sophomore Katie McCabe paced Colby with 13 points and seven rebounds, and senior Kate Emery scored 10 points.

The Jeffs return to action Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in a non-conference matchup at NESCAC and Little Three opponent Wesleyan University.
