Jeffs Post 75-39 Victory Over Conn
January 21, 2006
AMHERST, MA – Twelve different players found the scoring column for the Jeffs and no player saw less than 11 minutes of action as the Amherst women’s basketball team hammered visiting NESCAC foe Connecticut College, 75-39, on Saturday afternoon. The Jeffs improve to 7-8 and pick up their second NESCAC win (2-1), while Conn. falls to 5-8 and remains winless in conference play at 0-3.
Conn. took an early edge, winning the tip off and quickly converting a second-chance jumper by sophomore Lindsay Michel (West Haven, CT) into a three-point play just 23 seconds in. The lead, however, would be the only of the game for the visitors as Amherst used balanced scoring attack and full-court press to capitalize on seven Camel turnovers in the next six minutes and build an eight-point advantage, 17-9. Conn. battled back to within three, 23-20, on the strength of five straight points from sophomore guard Maegan Hoover (Newton, MA) around the six minute mark, but the Jeffs answered back, as rookie Susannah Ludwig (Charlottesville, VA) drained a layup at 4:30. Sophomore Shaina Pollack (Great Neck, NY) sank an and-one opportunity on the next Amherst possession and knocked down a trifecta for six straight points to spark a 12-2 Amherst run to close the half at 35-22.
Amherst raced out of the gates in the second half, quickly stretching their lead to 24, 51-27, and forcing four turnovers while committing none of their own. The Camels called a timeout to regroup at 15:10 but could not stop the deluge, as Amherst’s transition game was unstoppable: the Jeffs used 30 Connecticut turnovers to amass an astounding 32 points, 19 of them in the second stanza. The Amherst bench, which controlled the game for most of the final 15 minutes, accounted for 36 points and 27 of the team’s 35 rebounds.
Ludwig was stellar down the stretch, scoring six of her 10 points in the latter half of the second period. Meanwhile, classmate Amanda Otieno (Gloucester, MA) cleaned the boards, snatching a career-high eight rebounds. Junior Jenny Muller (N. Andover, MA) led all scorers with 11 points and chipped in a trio of steals. Senior co-captain Krissy Morin (Litchfield, NH) joined Muller and Ludwig in double figures with 10 points. Senior Julie Smith (Villanova, PA) and sophomores Pollack and Stefanie Reiff (Hinsdale, IL) finished with eight points a piece, while Smith pilfered three steals.
Sophomore Katy Serafin (Carmel, NY) led the Camels with nine points, while Hoover added eight to go along with eight rebounds.
The Jeffs return to action at 7 p.m. on Friday at conference rival Bowdoin College in the first of a four game road stretch.
