Jeffs Drop Doubleheader To Williams

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College softball team dropped both games of Saturday’s doubleheader to visiting NESCAC and Little Three rival Williams College. Home field advantage was on the line for next week’s NESCAC West tournament, and with the two victories Williams locked up the number one seed and the hosting honors. The Jeffs fell to 18-10 (5-3 NESCAC West) on the season and Williams improved to 26-8 (8-0 NESCAC West).

The Jeffs lost a tight one, 1-0, in the first match up of the afternoon. Senior hurler Miya Warner (Berkeley, CA) put in another stellar performance striking out ten and notching her twelfth complete game of the season. Williams took a 1-0 lead in the third after a pair of singles and some crafty base-running and the Amherst bats just never came alive. Williams hung on to the lead and eked out the slim victory in the defensive showdown.

In game two, sophomore Samantha Miller (Newton, MA) earned the start, but was pulled after a tough first two innings. Williams went up 4-0 in the first after a handful of Amherst errors as well as some strong hitting, and in the second they notched three more, extending their lead to 7-0 and ending Miller’s day. First-year Maddie Tamagni (Salinas, CA) came in and made a strong relief appearance but it was too little too late for Amherst. The Jeffs posted two in the fifth after a pair of singles by Holly Trace (Northport, AL) and Rachel Hoerger (Oakland, CA) and then threatened late in the game as they loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth but they were unable to capitalize. Williams posted two more runs in the seventh cementing a 9-3 victory.

As the No. 2 seed in the Western Division, the Jeffs return to action Friday against No. 1 East seed Tufts College in the first-round of the NESCAC West tournament, and are looking to replicate the 3-1 victory they hung on the Jumbos earlier in the season. The tournament is being held in Williamstown, Mass. at Williams College.
