Jeffs Best Brandeis in Eight Innings, 3-2
April 15, 2006
WALTHAM, MA – Rookie Alexa Princi (London, England) drove home the game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning as the Amherst College softball team defeated non-conference foe Brandeis University, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon. Princi went three-for-four with two RBI on the day, while classmate Julia Cummings (Los Angeles, CA) snatched a pop-fly in deep center field with Brandeis runners on second and third to make the last out and dash the Judges’ comeback hopes. With the win, Amherst moves to 15-6, while Brandeis falls to 13-17.
Brandeis got out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth when senior Bri Smith batted in sophomore Kaitlin Streilein, but Amherst responded in the top of the sixth as Princi earned the first of her RBI pair, plating sophomore Ralina Shaw (Tumwater, WA).
Tied at 1-1, the game entered extra innings, where sophomore catcher Elizabeth Neckes (Dover, MA) singled to drive in the go-ahead run, and pave the way for Princi’s game-winning hit. Brandeis got two hits in the bottom of the eighth, including an RBI single from sophomore pitcher Natalie Volpe, but Cummings’ late-game heroics got Amherst the tight win.
Junior third baseman Caroline Polales (Winnetka, IL) had a pair of hits, while sophomore hurler Samantha Miller (Newton, MA) earned the win in 4.2 innings of work, striking out three and allowing no earned runs.
Amherst returns to action Tuesday, when they play host to Trinity College at 4 p.m.
