AMHERST, MA - Senior co-captain Miya Warner (Berkeley, CA) and the Amherst College softball team lost a heartbreaker to Bates College 3-2 in extra innings in game one a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. The Jeffs bounced back in the second and split the twinbill, riding the stellar pitching of sophomore Samantha Miller (Newton, MA), and hot bats all around. The game was called in the fifth after Amherst secured an 8-0 lead. The Jeffs moved to 14-6 on the year, while Bates moved to 6-6.

Warner went all eight innings in the day’s first match-up striking out nine and allowing just five hits. The Bobcats took a1-0 lead in the sixth after an overthrow to first on a sacrifice bunt resulted in a Bates score. The Jeffs bounced back and evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning when junior Annalise Rodli (La Canada, CA) hit up the middle and was subsequently driven in by first-year Lindsay Harrington (Westford, MA), sending the game to extra innings. Bates posted two in the eighth and the Jeffs came up one short, dropping the game 3-2.

The Jeffs were all business in the second game, however, hanging an 8-0 mercy-rule loss on the Bobcats. Rodli, rookie Julia Cummings (Los Angeles, CA), and senior first baseman Laura Trigiero (Reston, VA) led the charge with two hits apiece, and Amherst never looked back after posting six in the second inning to take the lead. The game was called when Cummings laced a single up the middle in the bottom of the fifth. Miller was throwing heat all day, shutting out the Bobcats and only surrendering three hits, to improve to 2-3 on the season

Amherst returns to action as they take the road Saturday to face Brandeis College. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
