March 21, 2006

ORANGE COUNTY, CA – Senior hurler Miya Warner (Berkeley, CA) tossed a one-hit, 10-strikeout shutout to lead the Amherst College softball team to a 5-0 victory over Hope International University on Tuesday at the Sun West Tournament, hosted by Chapman University in Orange County, Calif. Sophomore Elizabeth Neckes (Dover, MA) led Amherst at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two double, two RBIs and a run scored as the Jeffs improved to 2-3.

The count remained deadlocked at 0-0 for four and a half innings until Amherst pumped out four runs in the bottom half of the fifth. Neckes’ second double of the game plated junior Annalise Rodli (La Canada, CA) and three straight singles by senior Laura Trigeiro (Reston, VA) and rookies Holly Trace (Northport, AL) and Lindsey Harrington (Westford, MA) accounted for two more runs. Harrington capped the inning, scoring on an infield error to put the Jeffs up 4-0. Neckes earned her second RBI of the game in the sixth, knocking home first-year Julia Cummings (Los Angeles, CA) with a single to left field.

Warner carried a no-hitter into the final frame, but it was spoiled by sophomore Lisa Teberg (Phoenix, AZ). First-year Leanna Valenzuela (Casa Grande, AZ) took the loss for the Royals.

Amherst continues Sun West Tournament play Thursday at 8:30 a.m. against The College of St. Catherine.
