Jeffs Suffer Season-Opening Losses to No. 15 St. Mary's, No. 1 St. Thomas

March 19, 2006

ORANGE COUNTY, CA – The Amherst College softball team suffered narrow losses to 15th-ranked St. Mary’s University, 1-0, and the top-ranked University of St. Thomas, 2-0, to open its season in Orange County, Calif. over the weekend. Senior pitcher Miya Warner (Berkeley, CA) was stellar on the mound in defeat, surrendering just four hits and one earned run in nine innings of work, while striking out eight in the two outings.

Warner’s only mistake in the season-opener against St. Mary’s proved to be costly as a solo home run by Cardinal junior Nikki Jung proved to be the only run of the game. Amherst rookie Emily Bularzik (Braintree, MA) tried to notch the tying run, reaching second base on an error in the first inning and scampering to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior Rachel Hoerger (Oakland, CA) after a double in the third, but couldn’t reach the plate. St. Mary’s first-year Erin Leone hurled seven innings of scoreless ball, striking out nine and allowing three hits.

Warner combined with sophomore Samantha Miller (Newton, MA) and first-year Maddie Tamagni (Salinas, CA) to pitch Sunday’s bout with St. Thomas as the trio let up just one earned run in the 2-0 loss. Miller took the hit, giving up one run on five hits and a walk, while Warner coughed up two hits and an unearned run in a pair of innings and Tamagni struck out one in the final inning of work. The Jeffs threatened in the sixth inning, loading the bases with no outs, but a double play and strike out ended the inning. Bularzik, classmate Lindsey Harrington (Westford, MA) and senior Laura Trigeiro (Reston, VA) each posted a hit in the loss.

Amherst returns to action Monday at 3:30 p.m. against Simon Fraser University, followed by a 5:45 p.m. matchup with Elmhurst College.
