WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - The Amherst College men's tennis team had three players reach the third round of singles competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association New England Region Men's Tennis Championships, hosted by Williams College over the weekend. Seniors Josh Rilla (Westboro, MA) and Danny Babkes (Baltimore, MD) and junior Lenny Lepner (Tartu, Estonia) all reached the Round of 16, while sophomore Geoff Schwartz (Dallas, TX) reached the second round before bowing out.
Rilla received a first-round bye as one of the top seven seeds in the tournament and disposed of Wentworth's Ricardo Robiglio in the second round before succumbing to Middlebury's Conrad Olson in the third round. Babkes posted victories over Coast Guard's Ryan Beck and Williams's Ted Haley before falling to eventual semifinalist Ari Beilin of Middlebury in the Round of 16. Lepner defeated Tufts's Will Fleder and Williams's Brian Monier before suffering a loss to Middlebury's Nathan Edmunds, while Schwartz cruised by Southern Maine's Justin Chaffee before falling to Wheaton's Payum Payman in second-round action.
In doubles play, both Amherst contingents suffered first-round losses, as Babkes and Rilla bowed to Middlebury's Salih Unsai and George Mayer, while Lepner and sophomore Mike Mintz (New York, NY) fell to eventual semifinalists Will Boe-Wiegaard and Tristan Beach of Bates.
Amherst returns to action Saturday at the Wallach Invitational, hosted by Bates College.
