Sixth-Seeded Jeffs Suffer 12-8 NESCAC Quarterfinal Loss At Third-Seeded Bowdoin April 30, 2006 The Polar Bears took control right out of the gates, building a 4-0 lead in the opening quarter. The run continued in the second period as Bowdoin mounted a 7-0 lead on the Jeffs before three straight Amherst goals made it 7-3 at the break. Amherst senior Joaquin Walker (Denver, CO) cut the lead to three, 7-4, in the beginning of the second half, but Bowdoin’s Andy Nelson found the back of the cage to stymie the four-goal Amherst run. However, the Jeffs weren’t done scoring, amassing a 3-1 flurry throughout the end of the third to hack the lead to two, 9-7, heading into the final frame. Junior quad-captain Derek Cherney (Chappaqua, NY) fed rookie Tim Thornton (Rockville Centre, NY) to pull Amherst within one, 9-8, to start the fourth quarter, but Bowdoin regained control down the stretch with a trio of unanswered scores to seal the win. Sophomore Will Ferrer (Greenwich, CT) led Amherst with three goals, while Cherney dealt a trio of assists on the day. Walker and Thorton tallied two goals apiece, senior quad-captain Andrew Wilcox (Brooklyn, NY) added a goal and sophomore Chris Mottau (Hollison, MA) dished out a helper. Rookie goalie Matt Pietroforte (Brooklyn, NY) finished with eight saves in a losing effort. |
