Jeffs Fall Just Short in Overtime at Wesleyan, 6-5

April 15, 2006

MIDDLETOWN, CT – The Amherst College men's lacrosse team suffered its fourth straight loss on Saturday afternoon, falling in overtime at Little Three rival Wesleyan University, 6-5. The Jeffs dropped to 2-7 overall and 1-5 in league play while Wesleyan improved to 10-1 (5-1 NESCAC). Six of the Jeffs' nine games this season have been one-goal decisions.

Amherst struck first when rookie attacker Brett Miller (Wantagh, NY) sniped his seventh goal of the season, but Wesleyan answered late in the first quarter when Russel Follansbee scored. The teams traded goals before junior Chris Hoffman (New Canaan, CT) scored off one of a trio of assists from junior quad-captain Derek Cherney (Chappaqua, NY), giving the Jeffs a 3-2 edge at halftime.

Wesleyan opened the third quarter with back-to-back scores from Follansbee and Grayson Connors, but the Jeffs battled back when Hoffman fed Cherney for his thirteenth tally of the season. Senior quad-captain Sean Murray (Madison, NJ) put Amherst ahead with 5:24 remaining, but Wesleyan's Alex Kaufman knotted the score for the Cardinals with 3:24 to play, sending the game to overtime. Connors ended the affair just 30 seconds into the extra frame with his 26th goal of the season.

Amherst rookie goalie Matt Pietroforte (Brooklyn, NY) made 14 saves, while Wesleyan's Charlie Congleton finished with 13 stops on the day.

The Jeffs return to action Thursday night at 7 p.m. at non-conference foe Springfield College.
