April 10, 2006

BEVERLY, MA – The Amherst College men’s lacrosse team suffered its second straight 7-6 loss on Monday night, falling at non-conference foe Endicott College. The Jeffs dropped to 2-6, while Endicott improved to 9-3.

Endicott got out to an early lead, tallying a trio of goals in the first quarter, while junior quad-captain Derek Cherney (Chappaqua, NY) managed to notch the only Amherst goal, converting a feed from fellow quad-captain Andrew Wilcox (Ancramdale, NY). A scoreless second frame left it 3-1 at the half.

The hosts pushed the lead out to 4-1 in the opening seconds of the third period as Eddie O’Reilly scored his second goal of the game. Amherst battled back with consecutive scores from junior Chris Hofmann (New Canaan, CT) and sophomore Will Ferrer (Greenwich, CT), but Endicott carried a two-goal edge into the final period using O’Reilly’s third tally to make it 5-3.

Endicott’s lead grew to four, 7-3, with two straight goals, and Amherst’s three-goal comeback effort fell just short.

Ferrer posted his second straight three-goal effort for the Jeffs, and Cherney finished with two goals and an assist. Hofmann added a goal and an assist, while Wilcox, classmate Caleb Deats (Austin, TX) and first-year Tim Thornton (Rockville Centre, NY) each dished out an assist. Rookie goalie Matt Pietroforte (Brooklyn, NY) continued his impressive performance in goal, grabbing 16 saves in the losing effort.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. at NESCAC and Little Three rival Wesleyan University.
