Jeffs Drop 7-6 Overtime Thriller to No. 13 Middlebury

April 8, 2006

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College men’s lacrosse team fell in overtime to visiting 13th-ranked NESCAC rival Middlebury College on Saturday, 7-6. The Jeffs fall to 2-5 overall and 1-4 in conference play with the loss, while Middlebury improves to 4-3 (3-1 NESCAC).

First-year goalie Matt Pietroforte  (Brooklyn, NY) gave an outstanding effort in goal for the Jeffs, notching 19 saves, but came up just one short as Panther senior Travis Meyer (Potomac, MD) picked up Pietroforte’s final save and dropped it home for the victory 1:07 into the extra frame.

Neither team could get on the board in the first quarter, but Middlebury opened the scoring just under two minutes into the second as senior J.P. Coviello (Summit, NJ) fed classmate Aaron Herter (Carlisle, MA) for the goal. The Jeffs got two straight unassisted tallies from sophomore Will Ferrer (Greenwich, CT) and rookie Brett Miller (Wantagh, NY) to take a 2-1 lead, but the Panthers managed to knot the score before the break on a goal from junior Will Simpson (Chevy Chase, MD).

Amherst gained an advantage in third as senior quad-captains Sean Murray (Madison, NJ) and Kevin Boova (Summit, NJ) both found the back of the net, but an Amherst penalty at the end of the frame led to a score by senior Henry Sheehan (Newport, RI) at the start of the final frame to make it 4-4.

After trading scores, Amherst pushed ahead one last time on Ferrer’s second goal of the period and third of the game. However, Sheehan tallied the equalizer with 3:10 left to play and the Panthers went on to prevail in the extra time.

Junior Alex Palmisano (Southport, CT) finished with 12 saves for the Panthers.

Amherst returns to action Monday at 6 p.m. at non-conference foe Endicott College.
