FROM A WESTERN NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE RELEASE

April 1, 2006

SPRINGFIELD, MA – The Amherst College men’s lacrosse team suffered a 14-6 loss at 19th-ranked non-conference foe Western New England College (WNEC) on Wednesday evening. The game, originally scheduled to be played at Amherst, was WNEC’s home-opener as they improved to 7-1, while the Jeffs dropped to 2-4.

Amherst hung tough in the opening frame, battling to a 2-1 deficit after the first 15 minutes. The Golden Bears broke it open in the second quarter, outscoring the Jeffs 6-0, to cruise out to an 8-1 halftime edge. The gap proved too wide for Amherst in the second frame and WNEC held on for the distant win.

Junior Derek Cherney (Chappaqua, NY) and sophomore Will Ferrer (Greenwich, CT) posted two goals apiece for the Jeffs, while sophomore T.J. Jackson and junior Rob Madden (New Haven, CT) each found the net once. Senior quad-captain Kevin Boova (Summit, NJ) dealt a pair of assists as well. First-year goalie Matt Pietroforte (Brooklyn, NY) posted seven saves in defeat.

Junior Adam Cherry paced the WNEC effort with six points on five goals and an assist. Chris Body finished with eight saves for the Golden Bears.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. against 13th-ranked visiting NESCAC rival Middlebury College.
