March 11, 2006
LEWISTON, ME – The 11th-ranked Amherst College men’s lacrosse team dropped its season- and NESCAC-opener at Bates College on Saturday afternoon, 13-6. Bates scored nine unanswered goals in the second half to power their way to the victory, improving to 2-0 (1-0), while Amherst drops to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Amherst played a tight opening half with Bates, battling the Bocats to a 4-4 tie at the half. Amherst rookie forward Brett Miller (Wantagh, NY) scored his second goal of the game at the 10:06-mark of the third quarter to give the Jeffs the lead. Bates answered less than two minutes later when Brett Morin dished it off to Matt Erisman who tallied one of his three scores of the game.
Bates seized control for good when Justin Simon scored a gorgeous goal at the 5:14 mark of the third and the Bobcats reeled off seven more during the Amherst scoring drought to put the game out of reach. Amherst and Bates were even in most of the statistical categories with the Bobcats slightly out shooting the Jeffs 36-32, winning the faceoff battle 12-9, and taking 36 ground balls to Amherst’s 35. Erisman netted three and dished out a pair while Morin finished with two goals and three assists fueling the Bates attack. Simon and Mike Medeiros each added a pair of finishes themselves.
Miller lead the Jeffs with his two scores while senior captain Sean Murray (Madison, NJ), senior Caleb Deats (Austin, TX), and juniors Rob Madden (New Haven, CT) and Chris Hofmann (New Canaan, CT) each tallied a goal of their own.
Amherst rookie netminder Matt Pietroforte (Brooklyn, NY) made 15 stops for the Jeffs while Pal Kazarien had 20 saves for the Bobcats.
