CAMBRIDGE, MA – The Amherst women’s track and field team finished 15th at the Open New England Championships hosted by MIT over the weekend, featuring athletes from Division I, II and III institutions. Amherst racked up 17 points for a 15th-place tie with Springfield College, while the University of Connecticut easily claimed the crown with 229.25 points. Williams College was the highest Division III finisher, taking second with 74.25 points.
Junior Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) paved the way for the Jeffs, grabbing the silver – and eight of Amherst’s points – in the 5,000 meter run (16.46.23). Rookie Zandra Walton (Skaneateles, NY) and co-captain Ginger Polich (Ironwood, MI) posted a strong showing in the 800 meter run, taking sixth and seventh place just .53 seconds apart. The pair joined with juniors Hannah Campbell (Garnerville, NY) and Maria Millard (Orono, ME) for a 4:02.3 seventh-place finish in the 4x400 meter relay. Millard also snagged eighth-place in the 400 meter hurdles, while sophomore Kim Partee (Brentwood, TN) posted an eighth-place finish of her own, in the 5K.
The men’s squad also gave a strong effort, as junior Sam Hayman (Evanston, IL) completed the 800 meter course in 1:55.76 to take 11th place for the Jeffs’ highest finish of the day. First-year Harrison Lakehomer (Eugene, OR) and sophomore Mike Harbus (New York, NY) crossed the 10,000-meter tape less than four seconds apart to post impressive12th and 15th place finishes. Meanwhile, the 4x800 relay team of juniors John Babbott (Ojai, CA) and Eric Glustrom (Boulder, CO) and sophomores Ben Read (Barkhamsted, CT) and Rom Cabeza (Enfield, CT) raced to a 14th-place finish in 8:21.9.
The Jeffs return to action May 18th at the ECAC Championships hosted by Springfield College.
