Jeffs Excel at Trinity's Bantam Invitational

HARTFORD, CT – The Amherst College men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams excelled at the Trinity College Bantam Invitational on Saturday. Senior Dave Schreiner (Manhattan Beach, CA) highlighted the men’s field, taking second in the 10,000-meter run, while junior All-America Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) and sophomore Kim Partee (Brentwood, TN) paced the women’s squad, winning the 5,000- & 10,000-meter runs, respectively.
The men’s team saw more long-distance success in the 5,000-meter run as juniors Rob Boley (Mount Pleasant, MI), John Babbott (Ojai, CA) and Richard Wilson (Columbus, OH) nabbed fourth, sixth and seventh. Fellow junior Sam Hayman (Evanston, IL) led the Jeffs in the 800- & 1,500-meter runs, taking seventh and 15th, respectively, and classmate Jon Ettinger (Chevy Chase, MD) nabbed eighth and 12th in the 200- & 400-meter dashes. Senior Tim Porter (Newton, MA) notched a ninth-place showing in the 400-meter hurdles, while fellow senior Nick Canevari (Warwick, NY) headed the Amherst field events, placing seventh in the discus and 10th in the javelin.
On the women’s side, Garrahan finished just ahead of senior teammate Ginger Polich (Ironwood, MI) and first-year Caitlin McDermott-Murphy (Newton, MA), who crossed the tape in seventh and eighth place. Polich and McDermott-Murphy also competed in the 800 together, taking third and eighth, respectively. Garrahan also led a group of five Amherst runners in the top 10 of the 5,000 as rookie Zandra Walton (Skaneateles, NY) took fourth, classmate Elise Tropiano (Plainview, NY) nabbed sixth, sophomore Meg Ray (Menands, NY) grabbed eighth and first-year Liz Dalton (Wayne, PA) finished 10th. Amherst also took the top five spots in the 10,000 as Partee led sophomore Heather Wilson (Danvers, MA), first-year Nicole Anderson (Kailua, HI) and sophomores Katie Moravec (Chico, CA) and Laura Mortimer (Jackson, MS). Junior Hannah Campbell (Garnerville, NY) placed fifth in the 200-meter dash and ninth in the 400, while rookie Carly Levenson took fifth in the 400 and ninth in the 200. Rookie Jenny Mancino (New York, NY) placed sixth in the 200 and senior Julia Rucker (Minneapolis, MN) grabbed seventh in the 400. Junior Maria Millard (Orono, ME) and first-year Kate Silverman (Upper Montclair, NJ) came home third and fourth in the 400-meter hurdles, while Millard finished seventh in the high jump, just two places ahead of Mancino. First-year Molly Priedeman (Long Lake, MN) helped out the Amherst field effort as well with an eighth-place showing in the long jump.Amherst returns to action Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Williams College Relays.
