Jeffs Compete At Trinity Last Chance

NEW HAVEN, CT – The Amherst men’s and women’s track teams excelled at the Trinity College Last Chance, hosted by Yale University on Friday night. Rookie Jenny Mancino (New York, NY) smashed a school record in the women’s 300-meter dash with her 44.59 ninth-place finish, while sophomores Kim Partee (Brentwood, TN) and Mike Harbus (New York, NY) picked up respective third-place honors in the 5,000-meter run.
Partee (17:45.40) led a pack of speedy Amherst runners in the 5K, as first-year Nicole Anderson (Kailua, HI) raced to a fifth-place finish and classmate Liz Dalton (Wayne, PA) took 15th. Senior co-captain Ginger Polich (Ironwood, MI) took sixth in the 800-meter run in 2:17.79, leading ninth-place finisher rookie Caitlin McDermott-Murphy (Newton, MA) by just over a second. Polich and McDermott-Murphy also led the women’s distance medley relay (DMR) team to runner-up honors, combining with junior Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) and first-year Zandra Walton (Skaneateles, NY) for a 12:05.14 showing, just .25 seconds off of race winner Wheaton College. Meanwhile, senior co-captain Julia Rucker (Minneapolis, MN), juniors Hannah Campbell (Garnerville, NY) and Maria Millard (Orono, ME) and rookie Carly Levenson (Richmond, VA) joined forces to post a strong fourth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay, and sophomore Heather Wilson (Danvers, MA) took eighth in the 1-mile run.
Harbus’ 15:05.42 showing in the 5K bested senior co-captain and fourth-place finisher Dave Schreiner’s (Manhattan Beach, CA) by just 2.67 seconds. Junior Sam Hayman (Evanston, IL) and first-year Stephen Stewart (Hartford, CT) each picked up a fourth-place finish, Hayman’s in the 800-meter run (1:54.61), and Stewart’s in the 400-meter dash (51.79). Hayman and Stewart also combined to lead junior John Babbott (Ojai, CA) and sophomore Basile Beaty (Belmont, MA) to a third-place performance in the 4x400-meter relay.
Amherst returns to action Friday and Saturday, March 10 and 11 at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn.
