MEDFORD & CAMBRIDGE, MA – Rookie phenom Nicole Anderson (Kailua, HI) bested the 5,000-meter field at the NCAA Women’s Division III New England Regional Championships, hosted by Tufts University over the weekend, to help lead Amherst to a third place team showing. The men’s squad finished 11th at the championships held at MIT.
Anderson’s 17:54.14 showing beat her closest competitor by more than four seconds and led a contingent of three Amherst runners in the top six. First-year Elise Tropiano (Plainville, NY) finished third in 17:59.07 while sophomore Katie Moravec (Chico, CA) posted a sixth-place showing less than 17 seconds later, and rookie Liz Dalton (Wayne, PA) rounded out the Amherst finishers in 13th. Classmates Carly Levenson (Richmond, VA) and Kate Silverman (Upper Montclair, NJ) placed fourth and 13th in the 600-meter run, while fellow first-year Zandra Walton (Skaneateles, NY) posted a strong showing in both the 800-meter and one-mile runs, finishing eighth and tenth, respectively. Junior Maria Millard (Orono, ME) set a school record in the pentathlon, amassing 3004 points, good for fourth place. The relay teams were also superb, as McDermott-Murphy, Walton and Polich joined with first-year Tovah Ackerman (Eden Prairie, MN) to take third in the 4x800 (9:34.52), just .02 seconds behind runner-up Bowdoin College. McDermott-Murphy posted another third place finish as she paired with Wilson, senior co-captain Julia Rucker (Minneapolis, MN) and junior Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) to cross the tape in 12:22.76 in the distance medley relay. Silverman and Levenson were joined by rookie Kathryn Loomis (Glastonbury, CT) and sophomore Hannah Campbell (Garnerville, NY) to take sixth in the 4x200 and Rucker, Campbell, Levenson and first-year Jenny Mancino (New York, NY) finished fifth in the 4x400.
Junior Sam Hayman (Evanston, IL) and sophomore Tomas Morrissey (Astoria, OR) each posted a third-place finish for the Jeffs, as Hayman was the lone competitor for the Jeffs in the 1,000-meter run, covering the distance in 2:32.60, and Morrissey led three Amherst runners in the 3,000-meter run. Morrissey’s 8:44.82 finish bested sixth-place finisher senior Dave Schreiner (Manhattan Beach, CA) by just under five seconds, while sophomore Mike Harbus (New York, NY) took eighth in 8:50.88. Rookie Stephen Stewart (Hartford, CT) took ninth in the 600-meter run and sophomore Basile Beaty (Belmont, MA) raced to a 10th place finish in the 800-meter run.
