Amherst Men's and Women's Track Excel at BU Valentine Classic and Wesleyan Invitational II

BOSTON, MA & MIDDLETOWN, CT – Select runners from the Amherst College men’s and women’s track and field teams competed against Division I, II and III opponents at the Valentine Classic hosted by Boston University this weekend, while the remainder of each squad raced at the Wesleyan Invitational II on Saturday. Sophomore Kim Partee (Brentwood, TN) and rookie Zandra Walton (Skaneateles, NY) each posted a NCAA provisional qualifying time at BU, while the men posted four individual wins and the women took home a trio of victories at Wesleyan.

Partee raced to a 17:38.35 16th-place finish in the 5,000-meter run to earn her provisional qualification, while Walton took 21st in 2:17.58 as she led a contingent of three Amherst runners in the 800-meter run. Senior co-captain Ginger Polich (Ironwood, MI) and rookie Caitlin McDermott-Murphy (Newton, MA) followed close behind in 27th and 38th place, respectively. Sophomore Heather Wilson (Danvers, MA) posted the best finish of the day for Amherst, taking 14th in the 3,000-meter run (9:59.15), 22 seconds ahead of first-year Nicole Anderson (Kailua, HI), who placed 38th. In the 500-meter run, rookie Carly Levenson (Richmond, VA) raced to 20th, and joined with Polich, Walton, and McDermott-Murphy for a 24th place finish in the 4x400-meter relay, just 17 seconds behind race winner Brown University.

On the men’s side, sophomore Basile Beaty (Belmont, MA) raced to an impressive 24th place in the 500-meter run in 1:06.62 with rookie Stephen Stewart (Hartford, CT) right on his heels. Sophomore Tomas Morrissey (Astoria, OR) took 38th in the 5K, while junior Sam Hayman (Evanston, IL) and first-year Jack Kiley (Garden City, NJ) placed 43rd and 73rd, respectively, in the 800-meter run.

Meanwhile, at Wesleyan, rookies Elise Tropiano (Plainview, NY) and Liz Dalton (Wayne, PA) grabbed victory in the 3,000-meter (10:29.45) and 5,000-meter (19:07.33) runs, while the 4x400-meter relay team of senior co-captain Julia Rucker (Minneapolis, MN), juniors Hannah Campbell (Garnerville, NY) and Maria Millard (Orono, ME) and first-year Jenny Mancino (New York, NY) also posted a win. Sophomore Katie Moravec (Chico, CA) took a pair of runner-up finishes in the one mile and 1,000-meter runs, while Campbell took third in both the 55- and 200-meter dashes. Millard took a second-place of her own in the 55-meter hurdles, leading third-place finisher rookie Kathryn Loomis (Glastonbury, CT).

For the men, rookie Harrsion Lakehomer (Eugene, OR) led a contingent of four Amherst runners in the top six with his first place finish in the 3,000-meter run (9:02.31), as junior Rich Wilson (Columbus, OH) and Rob Boley (Mount Pleasant, MI) and first-year Peter Foote (Shelburne, VT) took second, third and 6th. The men posted another strong showing in the one mile run, as junior John Babbott (Ojai, CA) led
rookie Joe Addison (Midlothian, VA) (third) and junior Eric Glustrom (Boulder, CO) (fourth), snatching the win. Babbott also ran a leg of the victorious 4x400-relay, joining with senior co-captain Tim Porter (Newton, MA) and sophomores Ben Read (Barkhamsted, CT) and Rom Cabeza (Enfield, CT). Read and Cabeza chipped in silver-medal finishes in the 600- and 800-meter runs, while junior Nate Freese (Tunbridge, VT) bested the 5K field in 16:04.66.

Amherst next competes on Saturday at Division III New England Regionals. The women travel to Tufts University, while the men race at MIT.
