Jeffs Fall at No. 8 Hobart, 4-2

FROM A HOBART COLLEGE RELEASE

December 10, 2005

GENEVA, NY – The Amherst College men's hockey team fell at eighth-ranked non-conference opponent Hobart College on Saturday, 4-2, falling to 3-3-1 on the season, while Hobart claimed its eighth straight, improving to 9-2. The host Statesmen outshot the Jeffs 45-30, and Amherst mustered only one power-play score on nine attempts in the loss.

The Jeffs drew first blood as senior forward A.J. Greco (Williamsville, NY) notched his team-leading fifth goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Michael McIntosh (Soldotna, AK) just 15 seconds after the puck dropped. However, Hobart would recover, scoring three straight to close the opening frame and produce a 3-1 lead. Hobart junior Mike Polsonetti evened the count with his first score of the year, and sophomore Shawn Houde tallied the go-ahead goal. Sophomore Brian Cibelli capped the first-period scoring with the eventual game-winner, capitalizing on the power play with only 37 seconds left on the clock.

Hobart senior Colby McVey tacked on an unassisted insurance tally just 34 ticks into the second session to secure the victory. Amherst first-year Will Collins (Edina, MN) tallied his first collegiate goal in the waning seconds of regulation, converting feeds from Greco and sophomore Kyle Schoppel (Cambridge, ON) for the power-play tally, but it proved too little, too late and the Statesmen held on for the win.

Junior Josh Fillman (Charlestown, MA) grabbed nine first-period saves before exiting, and sophomore goaltender Dan Smith (Rochester, MN) came on to collect 32 saves in the loss. Sophomore Dimitri Papaevagelou racked up 28 saves for the Statesmen.

Amherst returns to action Saturday, December 31, in the opening round of the Middlebury Classic
