Jeffs Close Regular Season with 3-1 Loss at Middlebury
FROM A MIDDLEBURY COLLEGE RELEASE
February 18, 2006
MIDDLEBURY, VT – For the second straight game, the Amherst College men’s hockey team suffered a narrow loss in the waning minutes of regulation as third-ranked NESCAC host Middlebury College scored twice in the final 1:30 for a 3-1 victory in both squads’ regular-season finale on Saturday. The Jeffs finish their season 12-11-1 overall and 9-9-1 in conference play, securing the No. 6 seed in the NESCAC Postseason Tournament, while Middlebury improved to 20-2-2 overall and 16-2-1 in conference play.
The Panthers opened the scoring at the 18:15-mark of the opening period as Mickey Gilchrist notched a power-play tally off assists from Jamie McKenna and Robert MacIntyre. The Jeffs answered just under three minutes into the second session as sophomore Rob Stevenson (Newton, MA) slipped a wrister just inside the right post off a feed from rookie Will Collins (Edina, MN). The count would remain deadlocked for the next 35:36 until Middlebury senior Jeff Smith scored the unassisted game-winner on a wrister from the high slot. Gilchrist added an insurance score in the waning seconds, finding the empty net off a helper from McKenna.
Amherst junior Josh Fillman (Charlestown, MA) grabbed 26 saves in net, while Middlebury’s Yen-I Chen posted 23 stops.
Amherst begins postseason play next Saturday, February 25, at 4 p.m. at third-seeded Bowdoin College.
