WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The Amherst College men’s hockey team suffered a 4-2 defeat on Friday night at Williams College despite a monumental effort by Amherst junior netminder Josh Fillman who made 42 saves including 19 in the final frame. Amherst dropped to 12-10-1 overall and 9-8-1 in conference play while the Ephs improved to 14-6-2 overall (13-3-2 NESCAC/ECAC East). Amherst is now tied for fifth in the NESCAC standings with Trinity College with one game to play in the regular season schedule.
Williams jumped on top with a power-play tally, but the Jeffs responded four minutes later when junior forward Sean Ellis (Springfield, MA) continued his blazing season with his eight goal of the year, scoring off assists from sophomores Gregg Adamo (Manalapan, NJ) and Kyle Schoppel (Cambridge, ON).
Williams regained the lead again on the power-play when Brandon Jackmun scored at the 11:19 mark of the second stanza. Ellis willed the Jeffs back, scoring off feeds from junior defenseman Brandon Zangel (Highlands Ranch, CO) and senior captain Jack Greeley (Scituate, MA).
The Ephs dominated play in the third period out shooting Amherst 21-2. But Fillman kept the Ephs at bay until Kevin Colwell scored with 2:49 to play before Devon O’Rourke added an empty-netter to secure a 4-2 victory for Williams. Brad Shirley made 19 stops for the Ephs.
Amherst will look to end their five-game slide tomorrow afternoon when they take on third-ranked Middlebury College.
