Amherst Slams Skidmore, 7-2
January 20, 2006
SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – The Amherst College men’s hockey team slammed ECAC East host Skidmore College on Friday afternoon, 7-2. Six different Jeffs found the back of the net as they improved to 9-5-1 overall and 6-3-1 in conference play, while Skidmore fell to 2-10-1 (2-7-1 ECAC East).
Rookie Brendan Powers (Walpole, MA) opened the rout, lighting the lamp off feeds from senior captain Jack Greeley (Scituate, MA) and sophomore defenseman Michael McIntosh (Soldotna, AK) at 7:17. Rookie Jeff Landers (Hanover, MA) followed suit four minutes later slapping home a power-play goal from junior Sean Ellis (Springfield, MA) and sophomore forward Andrew Schremp (Denver, CO). Junior Scott Schaub got the Thoroughbreds on the board at 15:38, but the Jeffs answered as MacIntosh converted a pass from first-year Rylan Burns (Mill Bay, British Columbia) on the power play before the end of the session.
The Jeffs picked up right where they left off after the break as senior forward A.J. Greco (Williamsville, NY) hammered one home just 33 seconds into the second period off a feed from rookie Will Collins (Edina, MN). Greco returned the favor late in the period as Collins knocked in his third score of the season at 14:27.
Powers opened scoring in the final stanza with his second goal off a dish from junior Erik Lund (Edina, MN). The Jeffs would have one more for Skidmore as Powers and junior defenseman Brandon Zangel (Highlands Ranch, CO) found Greeley for Amherst’s seventh score of the night. Thoroughbred Brady Greco scored with 7:24 remaining but could not bridge the close the Jeffs’ wide lead.
Junior Josh Fillman (Charlestown, MA) had 22 saves in goal for the Jeffs, while rookie A.J. Scola (Holden, MA) posted five stops in just under 10 minutes of action. Senior co-captain Mike Mansfield and sophomore Ted Levine split time for Skidmore, collecting 19 saves.
