January 14, 2006

AMHERST, MA - Amherst College senior forward Steve Nelson (Wayzata, MN) continued his sizzling weekend on Saturday, notching his seventh and eighth points in the last two days with a pair of goals in a 5-1 ECAC East victory over the visiting University of Southern Maine (USM). The Jeffs improved to 8-5-1 overall and 5-3-1 in conference play, while USM dropped to 3-9-2 overall and 2-5-2 in ECAC East play.

In a game that saw 27 penalties and over an hour of time in the penalty box, Amherst dominated the physical matchup from the opening drop. Nelson opened scoring with a power-play tally, taking a feed from senior captain Jack Greeley (Scituate, MA) and ripping a slap-shot from the right side at the 9:40-mark. Sophomore forward Kyle Schoppel (Cambridge, ON) added another man-advantage score just under five minutes later, burying a backhanded shot off feeds from senior forward A.J. Greco (Williamsville, NY) and sophomore forward Andrew Schremp (Denver, CO).

The Huskies got on the board in the second frame as senior Matt Mendoza (Rockland, MA) fired home a slap-shot on an odd-man rush in the second minute. Sophomore Rob Stevenson (Newton, MA) added another Amherst goal, blasting a slapper from the point at the 7:12-mark of the second, and Nelson and rookie Will Collins (Edina, MN) tacked on third-period scores to close the rout.

Greeley and junior defenseman Brandon Zangel (Highlands Ranch, CO) each dealt a pair of assists for Amherst.

Junior Josh Fillman (Charlestown, MA) and rookie netminder A.J. Scola (Holden, MA) combined for 25 saves for the Jeffs, while USM junior David Beckles (Stamford, CT) finished with 30 saves in a losing effort.
