February 28, 2006
AMHERST, MA – Just one day after being named New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Player of the Week, men’s basketball senior co-captain John Bedford (Ridgewood, NJ) also picked up Division III New England Player of the Week honors from the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) on Tuesday. Bedford was a force in NESCAC tournament play last weekend, leading the fourth-ranked and top-seeded Amherst College men’s basketball team to its second straight NESCAC Tournament title, with an 86-66 semifinal victory over fourth-seeded Bates College on Saturday and a 94-86 overtime win over Tufts University in the championship bout on Sunday.
Bedford poured in 44 points on the weekend, bring his career total to 1,425 and moving him into seventh place on the Amherst College all-time scoring list, and has the opportunity to gain ground on Saturday at 7 p.m. as the Jeffs take on the winner of Thursday’s NCAA Tournament First-Round matchup between Hamilton College and Plattsburg State University. Bedford stands just 12 points out of sixth-place, held by Josh Hammermesh ’94, and just 19 behind Robb Caseria ’82, in fifth. He is averaging 16.7 points per game on the season, while netting 12 or more in all but four games this season, and 19+ in six of the Jeffs’ last nine contests.
