AMHERST, MA – After leading the fifth-ranked and top-seeded Amherst College men’s basketball team to its second straight NESCAC Tournament title over the weekend, senior co-captain John Bedford (Ridgewood, NJ) was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Player of the Week on Monday.
Bedford combined for 44 points and 13 rebounds, posting 21 points and eight rebounds in an 86-66 semifinal victory over fourth-seeded Bates on Saturday and compiling 23 points and five boards in Sunday’s 94-86 overtime championship win over No. 3 seed Tufts. With 1,425 career points to his credit, Bedford moved into seventh place on the Amherst College all-time scoring list, surpassing John Pavelski '98 and former teammate Andrew Schiel ’05 on the weekend.
He currently stands among the NESCAC leaders in a bevy of categories including scoring (16.7 ppg), field goal percentage (.519) and free throw percentage (.809). He also ranks ninth in the conference in steals per game (1.59) and three-point field goal percentage (.461).
Bedford and the rest of the Amherst squad return to action Saturday at 7 p.m. against the winner of Thursday’s NCAA Tournament First-Round matchup between Hamilton College and Plattsburgh St. University.
