May 6, 2006

WALTHAM, MA – The Amherst College baseball team concluded its regular-season slate with a pair of victories at Division II foe Bentley College on Saturday, earning a narrow 3-2 win in the opener and taking the nightcap, 7-1. Senior Dave Levinson (Chester Springs, PA) paced the offense with four RBI on the day, while classmate Joe Vladeck (Washington, DC) and junior Nick Kehoe (Washington Depot, CT) picked up respective wins on the mound as the Jeffs improved to 22-9-1.

Vladeck continued his dominating season in game one, improving to 7-0 with seven innings of three-hit ball. Sophomore Chris Edgar (Massapequa, NY) picked up his first save of the year, holding off Bentley for the final two innings. Junior Jared Banner put Amherst on the board in the first frame, doubling to left field and finding his way home on a passed ball and a wild pitch. Levinson tacked on two more runs in the sixth, plating Banner and sophomore Josh Card (North Adams, MA) with a single. The Falcons got two back in a ninth-inning rally, but Edgar managed to close the door, stranding a pair of base runners.

Banner was 2-for-3 with a pair of stolen bases, while Card was 2-for-2 with a walk. Senior Zach Schonberger (Rye, NY) and rookie Brendan Powers (Walpole, MA) each had a hit as well.

Juniors Nick Kehoe (Washington Depot, CT) and Brian Donahue (Sudbury, MA) split up the second game as Kehoe improved to 6-2, giving up one run on four hits and two walks in five innings of work, while Donahue scattered six hits in four innings and struck out three to earn the save.

The hosts struck first, picking up a run on an RBI double in the opening frame. The Jeffs answered with a pair in the third, two more in the sixth and three in the final inning to leave no doubt. Schonberger and Banner each went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Banner swiped a bag as well. Senior Andrew Green (Lexington, MA), junior Tom Scott (Randolph, NJ) and sophomore Neal Allar (Floyds Knobs, IN) each notched a pair of hits, with Allar earning an RBI and Green crossing the plate twice.

Amherst narrowly missed a bid to the NESCAC Tournament, but awaits possible word of an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
