AMHERST, MA –  The Amherst College baseball team used a pair of dominating pitching performances to sweep an afternoon doubleheader over visiting NESCAC West opponent Hamilton College. The Jeffs took game one, 1-0, and rolled in game two, 10-2, improving to 13-4-1 on the season (5-0-1 NESCAC West) while the Continentals dropped to 5-13 overall (0-3 NESCAC West).

Junior pitcher Nick Kehoe (Washington, CT) was in control throughout the opener, shutting out Hamilton while giving up a measly three hits and whiffing eight batters to improve to 3-1 on the season. A dazzling back-hand stab on a come-backer highlighted his dominating performance. Hamilton starter Kevin Coppola (Clarence, NY) was nearly as impressive throwing five innings of shutout ball.

A two-out walk-off single through the middle by Amherst senior outfielder Andrew Green (Lexington, MA) in the bottom of the seventh lifted the Jeffs past Hamilton in the pitcher’s duel. Sophomore designated hitter Neal Allar (Floyd Knobbs, IN) was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles to lead the Jeffs offensively.

In the second game, Amherst senior starter Joe Vladeck (Washington, DC) stifled the Continentals through seven innings, surrendering four hits and striking out three to run his record to 3-0. Hamilton’s Bryden Considine (Cabot, VT) took the loss going six innings and giving up six earned runs on 12 hits.

The Amherst bats came alive early, scoring seven runs in the first three innings en route to a 10-2 trouncing. Junior second baseman Mark Mazzone (Wilmette, IL) was 3-for-5 with four RBI and a pair of runs while junior outfielder Tom Scott (Randolph, NJ) went 2-for-5 with three RBI to lead the Jeff offense. Senior first baseman Dave Levinson (Chester Springs, PA) had a pair of hits and a run scored while Allar crossed the plate three times.

Amherst looks to continue its 12-game unbeaten streak when they travel to non-conference foe Keene State College Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
