Amherst's Powers Named NESCAC Baseball Co-Player of the Week
April 3, 2006
AMHERST, MA – Amherst College rookie third baseman Brendan Powers (Walpole, MA) was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Baseball Co-Player of the Week on Monday after erupting for 12 RBI and his first two collegiate homers in a 3-0-1 week for the Jeffs.
Both of Powers’ round-trippers came during a streak where he reached base in 11 consecutive trips to the plate. The first was a three-run shot in Thursday’s 18-6 victory over visiting non-conference foe Westfield State College, while the second was a grand slam in Amherst’s 24-3 conference-opening win over visiting NESCAC West and Little Three rival Wesleyan University on Saturday. Powers was 6-for-14 on the week with seven runs scored, a double and five walks.
Powers is hitting .447 for the season, good for second on the team and ninth in the conference, with 21 hits and a .660 slugging percentage. He is the second Amherst first-year to be named NESCAC Player of the Week this season as classmate Angus Schaller (Leucadia, CA) earned conference honors for the week of March 20.
Amherst returns to action Wednesday at 3 p.m. against visiting non-conference opponent Eastern Connecticut State University.
