Jeffs Win Seventh Straight, Wallop Wesleyan, 24-3

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College baseball team won its NESCAC-opener and seventh straight game, walloping visiting conference and Little Three rival Wesleyan University on Friday, 24-3. Rookies Brendan Powers (Walpole, MA) and Angus Schaller (Leucadia, CA) combined for 10 RBI as the Jeffs improved to 9-4 (1-0 NESCAC West), while the Cardinals dropped to 6-7 (0-1 NESCAC West).
Amherst crossed the plate in six of seven innings before the game was called to due darkness in the middle of the eighth inning. The biggest offensive explosion came in the bottom half of the seventh when Amherst notched eight runs on nine hits, including a three-run double from Schaller and a grand slam by Powers. Schaller finished 4-for-7 with two doubles, four RBI and three runs scored, while Powers has reached base safely in 11 straight at bats, going 3-for-3 with a homer, three walks, six RBI and four runs scored. Sophomore designated hitter Neal Allar (Floyds, Knobs, IN) went 2-for-6 with a double, four RBI and two runs scored, junior Jared Banner (Brooklyn, NY) added a trio of hits, driving home three runs and scoring one of his own, classmate Mark Mazzone (Wilmette, IL) went 3-for-6 with two RBI and a run scored and senior Dave Levinson (Chester Springs, PA) smashed a solo shot and crossed the dish four times.
Junior hurler Brian Donahue (Sudbury, MA) picked up his second win of the season (2-0), keeping the Cardinals at bay for seven innings, allowing two earned runs on nine hits, while fanning seven batters. Rookie Daren Snyder (Dalton, MA) made his first collegiate appearance on the mound in relief, tossing a scoreless eighth inning to close out the win.
Senior Eric Wdowiak (Nutley, NJ) took the loss for Wesleyan, falling to 2-1 on the season as he surrendered 10 runs (seven earned) on nine hits and three walks in four innings of work. Senior Anthony Gray (Upper Montclair, NJ), junior Rob Coughlin (Saratoga Springs, NY) and sophomore Chris Simpson (Bow, NH) each had a pair of hits for the Cardinals, while Coughlin and sophomore Daniel Poniatowski (Castro Valley, CA) each had an RBI.
The two squads face off again tomorrow (Saturday) at noon for a doubleheader at Wesleyan.
