AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College baseball team hammered visiting non-conference foe Westfield State College in the Jeffs' home-opener on Thursday. Rookie Brendan Powers (Walpole, MA) led the Amherst onslaught, going 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBI as the Jeffs won their sixth straight and improved to 8-4, while Westfield St. dropped to 7-8.
Amherst’s trio of pitchers started with senior captain Rob Anderson (Winnetka, IL) leading the way before rookies Ryan Platzbecker (Westlake, OH) and Ben Goldfarb (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) closed it out combining on a nine-hit, six-run performance. Anderson improved to 1-1 on the hill, while Goldfarb notched his first save of the season. Sophomore catcher Neal Allar (Floyds, Knobs, IN) had three hits, plated four and crossed home three times himself while Powers’ three-run jack came during Amherst’s seven-run fifth inning.
It didn’t take long for the Jeffs to gain control, scoring eight runs in the first two innings to run away from the Owls. Senior Dave Levinson (Chester Springs, PA) opened the scoring with an RBI single during his 3-for-5 day with three runs scored, while senior tri-captain Zach Schonberger (Rye, NY) added two hits, two runs and upped his team-high RBI total with three giving him 17 on the season. Sophomore catcher Josh Card (North Adams, MA) pounded out three hits and a pair of RBI’s while junior second baseman Mark Mazzone (Wilmette, IL), junior outfielder Tom Scott (Randolph, NJ) and rookie outfielder Angus Schaller (Leucadia, CA) all plated a Jeff during the rout.
Junior shortstop Justin Parr (North Attleboro, MA) led Westfield St. with two hits and two RBI, while senior outfielder Shane Higgins (North Brookfield, MA) knocked in two of his own. Senior starting pitcher Joe DeSoldato (W. Stockbridge, MA) was tagged for eight runs in two innings for the Owls and picked up the loss, falling to 0-2 on the season.
Amherst returns to action tomorrow afternoon when it welcomes Little Three rival Wesleyan University to Memorial Field at 3 p.m.
