NEW YORK, NY - Amherst College senior co-captain Ali Gibbs (Greenwich, CT) and sophomore Emily O’Brien (New Canaan, CT) each earned first-round victories at the 2005 Women’s Squash Cummings Cup, held at the University Club of New York and the Yale Club over the weekend.

Gibbs defeated Harvard’s Lindsey Wilkins in the opening draw before falling to Yale sophomore Lauren McCrery in the second round. O’Brien upset third-seeded Kyla Grigg of Harvard in her first-round matchup before bowing to Yale senior Frances Ho. Amherst head coach Jackie Bagwell competed as well, besting Princeton’s Marilla Hiltz before falling to Yale first-year Sarah Barenbaum in the second round.

Yale dominated the event, advancing six of the eight quarterfinalists and all four semifinalists, including eventual tournament champion, second-seeded Michelle Quibell ’06.

The Jeffs return to action on Friday, hosting the Amherst Invitational.
