Third-Ranked Jeffs Rally Past No. 16 Wheaton, 11-8

FROM A WHEATON COLLEGE RELEASE

April 24, 2005

NORTON, MA - The third-ranked Amherst College women’s lacrosse team overcame an 8-5 second-half deficit to deal 16th-ranked non-conference host Wheaton College (10-4) its first loss of the season on Sunday. Sophomore Dana Kuper (Denver, CO) led the Jeffs’ late surge with a trio of goals and three assists as Amherst improved to 9-1.

Wheaton senior Vanessa Pisano guided the Lyons to a 6-3 halftime edge, scoring five goals and assisting on the sixth. Amherst rallied out of the break as Kuper scored twice in the first five minutes to pull within one, but Wheaton responded with back-to-back tallies from juniors Molly Cronin and Julia Coit to stretch the lead back to three, 8-5, with just over 20 minutes left. Kuper again sparked an Amherst comeback, netting a goal and dealing a pair of assists to deadlock the score at 8-8 with 5:50 remaining. Junior Caitie Parker (Bethesda, MD) netted the eventual game-winner off a free-position opportunity with just under four minutes left, and senior Ashley Harmeling (N. Reading, MA) and junior Scotty Hanley (Baltimore, MD) tacked on insurances tallies down the stretch to secure the win. The Jeff defense kept the Wheaton offense in check for the final 20 minutes of regulation to anchor the comeback.

Harmeling finished with three goals and two assists, while Hanley and Parker each netted a pair of goals and rookie Gretchen DeLuke (Lewiston, NY) scored once. Senior co-captain goalie Liv D'Ambrosio (Farmington, CT) grabbed 12 saves in the win.

Amherst returns to action Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at NESCAC rival Tufts University.
