Third-Ranked Jeffs Suffer First Loss, Fall at No. 2 Middlebury, 18-6

FROM A MIDDLEBURY COLLEGE RELEASE

April 23, 2005

MIDDLEBURY, VT - The third-ranked Amherst College women’s lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, falling at second-ranked Middlebury College, 18-6. The host Panthers piled 12 first-half goals en route to their ninth straight victory, while Amherst dropped to 8-1 (6-1 NESCAC).

Sophomore Dana Kuper (Denver, CO) gave the Jeffs an early 1-0 edge, but it would be their only lead of the day as Middlebury rallied with three scores over a 1:55 span to take a 3-1 advantage with 19:30 left in the first half. Kuper netted a free-position tally to pull back within one, but a four-goal Panther rally stretched the lead to 7-2 and Middlebury would never look back. After a score by Amherst sophomore Alyssa Briody (Hopewell, NJ), the Panthers posted a third outburst, closing the half on a 5-0 run to take a 12-3 edge into the break.

Kuper and Briody each found the net in the opening minutes of the second half, but the Jeffs couldn’t find their offensive groove and added just one more goal down the stretch. Kuper finished with a season-high four goals and one assist, while Briody added two scores. Amherst senior co-captain goalie Liv D'Ambrosio (Farmington, CT) grabbed 15 saves in just over 58 minutes, and rookie Kathleen Boucher (Washington, DC) nabbed a pair of saves in the final 1:45.

Elizabeth Renehan and Kim Walker scored four goals apiece to lead the Middlebury offense, while Schulyer Winstead added three goals and three assists. Johanna Rosenfield collected nine saves in goal as the Panthers improved to 10-1 (7-0 NESCAC).

Amherst returns to action tomorrow (Sunday) at noon at non-conference foe Wheaton College.
