Third-Ranked Jeffs Hold Off No. 10 Colby, 13-9

April 9, 2005

AMHERST, MA - The third-ranked Amherst College women’s lacrosse team scored seven straight goals over a span of 18 minutes in the first half and held off visiting 10th-ranked NESCAC rival Colby College after the break to notch a 13-9 victory on Saturday. Eight different players found the net for the Jeffs, led by senior Ashley Harmeling (North Reading, MA), who finished with five goals and an assist, as Amherst remained undefeated at 5-0 (3-0 NESCAC), while Colby fell to 7-2 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Colby took a 2-1 lead with 19:55 to go in the first half on a pair of free-position goals by junior Elizabeth Ghilardi (Norwell, MA). Amherst reeled off the next seven scores, including three by Harmeling and two by first-year Maddie Hoeg (Shoreham, NY), to take an 8-2 edge with 1:38 left in the frame. Colby stopped the run just 21 seconds later with a score from junior Kelsey Neville (Duxbury, MA) and closed the half trailing 8-3.

Colby gained momentum after the break, notching three straight goals, including a pair in a 20-second span by sophomore Allie Libby (Needham, MA), to close the gap to 8-6. Harmeling then righted the ship for the Jeffs, scoring her fourth goal of the game at the 21:22-mark, and Amherst scored four of the next five goals to take a commanding 13-7 lead with 5:01 to play. Colby got two late goals from first-year Lauren Barrett (Fairfield, CT) to trim the deficit to four, but the Mules were unable to get any closer.

Amherst sophomores Dana Kuper (Denver, CO) and Alyssa Briody (Hopewell, NJ) each notched a goal and two assists on the afternoon, while junior Caitie Parker (Bethesda, MD) and sophomore Liz Wise (Scarsdale, NY) tallied a goal and an assist apiece. Junior Scotty Hanley (Baltimore, MD) and sophomore Lauren Dudley (Baltimore, MD) each scored once.

Amherst senior co-captain Liv D'Ambrosio (Farmington, CT) posted another stellar effort in goal, collecting eight saves, while sophomore Catharine O’Brien (Reading, VT) grabbed 12 saves for the Mules. Barrett scored four goals and tallied an assist, all in the second half, to lead Colby.

Amherst returns to action Thursday at 4:30 p.m. against visiting NESCAC foe Connecticut College.
