Simon Named NESCAC Co-Player of the Week

AMHERST, MA - Amherst College sophomore defender Rachel Simon (West Orange, NJ/West Orange HS) was named the NESCAC Women’s Hockey Co-Player of the Week after posting four goals and three assists in a 3-0 week for the Jeffs, highlighted by a hat trick in Saturday’s 4-1 win at Trinity College.

Simon, a Preseason Third-Team All-U.S. College Hockey Online selection, opened the week with an assist in a 5-4 win over visiting non-conference foe Holy Cross and followed with a goal and a pair of assists in Friday’s 4-2 win at Wesleyan. She’s currently ranked first in the NESCAC and sixth in the nation in defenseman scoring with 1.29 points per game, good for sixth in the conference and 30th in the country in overall scoring. She’s also tied for second in the NESCAC in assists (17) and ninth in goals (10). As a first-year, Simon finished third in the NESCAC in defenseman scoring (22 pts.), tied for sixth in game-winning goals (3), tied for seventh in power-play goals (7), tied for 10th in goals (14), tied for 17th in power-play points (4) and ranked 19th in scoring (22 pts.). She also led the Jeffs to their first winning season in school history, a program-record 13 wins and the No. 5 seed in the NESCAC Postseason Tournament.

Amherst has won five of its last six and hosts non-league foe St. Anselm College Wednesday at 7 p.m. before traveling to Williams College for Friday night’s (7 p.m.) non-league tilt against Elmira. The seven-team NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament will commence with quarterfinal play on Saturday, Feb. 26, with the semifinals and finals set for the following weekend.
