Jeffs Skate to 2-2 Tie at No. 8 St. Thomas

FROM A UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS RELEASE

January 17, 2005

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, MN - Amherst College sophomore Rachel Simon (West Orange, NJ) tallied a goal and an assist, and junior Leah Kaplan (Buffalo, NY) also found the back of the net to lead the Amherst women's hockey team to a 2-2 tie at the eighth-ranked University of St. Thomas in Mendota Heights, Minn. on Monday. The Jeffs moved to 3-5-4 overall with the non-league stalemate.

After a scoreless opening period, St. Thomas first-year Holly Noble fed classmate Courtney Sekevitch at the 12:32-mark of the second frame for the 1-0 advantage. Simon answered just over two minutes later with an unassisted power-play tally, her sixth of the year. Kaplan gave the Jeffs a 2-1 edge 3:04 into the third session as Simon dished out her team-high 11th assist of the season. However, the host Toms went on the power play just 34 seconds later and junior Allison O’Hara used the advantage to knot the score. Both squads could only mount one shot on goal in the extra frame, sealing the stalemate.

Amherst sophomore Lindsay Grabowski (Princeton, NJ) went the distance in goal, collecting 28 saves, while junior Becky Kilpatrick posted 15 saves for St. Thomas, which moved to 10-2-2.

Amherst returns to action Friday at 7 p.m. at NESCAC rival Colby College.
