Jeffs Bow to Springfield in Day Two of Pioneer Valley Classic

December 4, 2004

SPRINGFIELD, MA - After opening tournament play with a dramatic 76-72 overtime win over Westfield State College on Friday night, the Amherst College women’s basketball team dropped a 67-59 decision to Springfield College in day two of the Fourth-Annual Pioneer Valley Classic, hosted by Western New England College, on Saturday.

Amherst (4-2) placed three players in double figures in the loss - junior guard Krissy Morin (Litchfield, NH) with 15 points, sophomore guard Jenny Muller (Andover, MA) with 13 and junior forward Katie Latham (Wakefield, MA) with 12. Latham added team highs of nine rebounds and four assists and was named to the all-tournament team, along with Muller.

The Jeffs claimed an early 10-point advantage when rookie forward Matia Kostakis (Andover, MA) drilled a pair of free throws with 12:50 left before the break. Down but not out, Springfield (4-1) responded with a 36-10 flurry for a 43-27 halftime lead.

After falling behind by 20 in the second half, Amherst managed to whittle the deficit to just five points with a 24-9 burst, capped by a Muller layup off a Latham assist. The Jeffs would get no closer as Springfield shot 6-for-8 from the charity stripe down the stretch.

Christine Cotter paced four Springfield players in double figures with 16 points.
