Jeffs Outlast Westfield State in Overtime in Opening Round of Pioneer Valley Classic

December 3, 2004

SPRINGFIELD, MA - Rookie forward Matia Kostakis (Andover, MA) posted her second double-double of the season on Friday night, leading all scorers with 23 points and grabbing a game-high 16 rebounds to lead the Amherst College women’s basketball team to a dramatic 76-72 overtime win over Westfield State College in the opening round of the Pioneer Valley Classic, hosted by Western New England College (WNEC).

With the win, the Jeffs advance to the championship game, where they’ll take on Springfield College tomorrow (Saturday) at 2 p.m. Springfield downed host WNEC 62-53 in Friday night’s other first-round matchup.

Amherst took what seemed to be a commanding 11-point lead when Kostakis hit the first of two free throws with just 3:34 left in regulation. Westfield State rallied to knot the score with a 13-2 run, capped by a Meghan McCarthy free throw with two seconds on the clock. McCarthy then had a chance to win the game with a second charity toss but came up empty, sending the game into overtime.

The Jeffs outscored Westfield State 10-6 and led the entire way in the extra session. Amherst sophomore Jenny Muller (Andover, MA) scored four points on a pair of layups in overtime to help seal the victory.

Muller joined Kostakis in double figures with 14 points, while junior Katie Latham (Wakefield, MA) added a double-double of her own with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Kostakis’ game-high 23 points came on 10-for-14 shooting.
