KEENE, NH - The Amherst College women’s basketball team dealt non-conference host Keene State College its first loss of the season on Tuesday night, 48-33. Amherst sophomore guard Jenny Muller (Andover, MA) and rookie forward Matia Kostakis (Andover, MA) scored 10 points apiece as the Jeffs improved to 3-1, while the Owls fell to 3-1.

Amherst took command of the game early, jumping out to an 15-2 lead. However, Keene St. rallied with a 15-2 run of its own capped by a three pointer from junior guard Bekka Hopkins to knot the score at 17-17 with just under three minutes remaining in the first half. The Jeffs finished the half with 11 straight points, including five from junior guard Ali Flato (Piedmont, CA), to take a 28-17 advantage into the break.

Amherst stretched its lead to 16 in the opening minutes of the second half and would never look back, holding Keene St. to just 21.4% (12-for-56) shooting from the floor. Amherst first-year point guard Shaina Pollack (Great Neck, NY) finished with four assists and a career-high five steals, while junior forward Julie Smith (Villanova, PA) collected a career-high 14 caroms, blocked a pair of shots and had three steals as well.

Hopkins paced the Owls with 14 points, while sophomore forward Sarah Begnoche grabbed 14 rebounds.

Amherst returns to action Friday at 8 p.m. against non-conference foe Westfield State College at the Pioneer Valley Classic hosted by Western New England College.
