Morin Ties School Record in Win Over Mt. Holyoke

November 23, 2004

AMHERST, MA - Junior co-captain guard Krissy Morin (Litchfield, NH) equaled a single-game school record with 10 assists and notched her first career double-double as the Amherst College womenís basketball team improved to 2-1 with a 67-51 non-league win over visiting Mt. Holyoke College (1-2) on Tuesday night.

The Jeffs placed all five starters in double figures in the win. Junior forward Katie Latham (Wakefield, MA) led the way with 14 points, while sophomore Jenny Muller (Andover, MA) added 11 and Morin and rookies Shaina Pollack (Great Neck, NY) and Matia Kostakis (Andover, MA) pitched in with 10 apiece. Kostakis paced Amherst on the boards with a game-high 11 caroms.

The Jeffs stormed out of the gates with a backbreaking 22-4 run over the gameís first 10 minutes. Morin dished out five assists during the flurry, which was capped by the first of two three-pointers by Pollack.

After trailing by as many as 20 points in the second half, Mt. Holyoke ratcheted its defense up a notch and managed to whittle the lead down to 11 points on the strength of three-pointers by sophomore Angela Astuccio (Foxboro, MA), senior Sara Belding (Sebastopol, CA) and junior Jeanne Powers (Danvers, MA).

Amherst regained control with slick ball-handling from Pollack and crafty high-post passing by Latham and Kostakis and pushed the lead back to 19 points with an 8-0 run. Kostakis punctuated the win with a nifty layup off a back-door feed from Latham, and Amherst emptied its bench over the final two minutes.

Junior center Jonee Billy (New York, NY) led Mt. Holyoke with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Astuccio added 15 points on 5-for-8 shooting off the bench.

Morinís 10 assists place her alongside Sara Bozorg í03 in the Amherst record book. Bozorg dropped 10 dimes in a 69-45 win over visiting Clark University on Dec. 9, 2000.

Amherst returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 1 at non-league Keene St.
