Jeffs Open Season with 70-47 Win Over Albertus Magnus at Colby-Sawyer Tip-Off Classic

NEW LONDON, NH - The Amherst College women’s basketball team opened its season with a 70-47 win over Albertus Magnus College in the opening round of the Colby-Sawyer Tip-Off Classic on Friday night. Junior forward Katie Latham (Wakefield, MA) paced the Jeffs with 15 points and six boards, while first-year Matia Kostakis (Andover, MA) posted eight points and 11 rebounds in her collegiate debut.

Amherst jumped out to a 28-18 lead as Latham scored seven first-half points and rookie point guard Shaina Pollack (Great Neck, NY) chipped in six points and seven rebounds, while the Jeff defense held Albertus Magnus to just 23.3% (7-for-30) shooting from the field.

The Jeff onslaught continued in the second half as they shot a blistering 63% (17-for-27) from the floor. Senior co-captain Kate Herlihy (Glens Falls, NY) scored nine points on a trio of trifectas, while first-year Stefanie Reiff (Hinsdale, IL) was a perfect 4-for-4 for nine points in just 13 minutes of play.

Sophomore Candace Young led the Falcons with 12 points and five rebounds.

The Jeffs advance to tomorrow’s (Saturday) championship game at 4 p.m. where they’ll face host Colby-Sawyer, which upended University of Maine-Machias 74-55 in its first-round matchup.
