Kostakis Named NESCAC Co-Rookie of the Year

February 26, 2005

AMHERST, MA - Amherst College first-year forward Matia Kostakis (Andover, MA) was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Women’s Basketball Co-Rookie of the Year on Thursday, as selected by the conference’s head coaches. She shares the award with Bates guard Sarah Barton, who led the conference in assists with 4.58 per game.

Kostakis was a dominant force for Amherst, which finished the season at 15-11 and upset NCAA Tournament-bound Wesleyan University in the opening round of the NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament, starting every game to the tune of 10.5 points, 9.8 boards and 1.3 rejections per outing. She’s currently tied for the league-lead in rebounding and stands third in blocked shots (1.31/gm), fourth in field goal percentage (49.8%), 15th in steals (1.69/gm) and 19th in scoring (10.5 ppg).

Kostakis was the Jeffs’ top scorer in 18 games this season and tallied seven double-doubles on the year.
